Hello, I am Maggie Evans and my ‘journey’ into basketry began when I was still working as an art teacher and attended a weekend of willow weaving with professional basket maker Mandy Coates after relocating to Ynys Mon, Anglesey, in 2019. This formative experience led me to learn rush weaving with Felicity Irons a few months later. Since those two courses I haven’t stopped weaving and learning.
In 2022 I enrolled on the Level 2 City & Guilds Basketry course at Westhope College, Shropshire. This year marked a huge turning point in developing my skills and creative practice as a basket maker which continues today developing more advanced technical basketry techniques, and exploration of natural materials. My work draws inspiration from my local area of woods, beaches, and mountains through choice of willow combinations reflecting the colour palette of my surroundings, and through form. I weave mainly with willow, rush and foraged materials to make both functional, traditional and innovative baskets as well as decorative forms.
Still a teacher at heart I enjoy passing on the skills and knowledge I have gained while developing my own practice by helping beginners make their first baskets on day workshops as well as working with more experienced makers to progress and develop their skills.
You can find my work in local gallery shops such as Oriel Mostyn and selected contemporary makers events both within North Wales and further afield e.g. RHS Harlow Carr, Harrogate.
Or you can commission me to make a more bespoke design to suit you. Please contact me with your requirements and I’ll be happy to chat with you.
